There are many different types of security systems available on the market today. The trick is to find the one that is best suited for your own personal security needs.
The first major division in security systems is between the business system and the residential system. Business security systems and residential security systems can share some of the similar technology, of course, but so the distinction is mostly in the use of the system. The business security system protects a business and the home security system protects a home. Business security systems would tend to include more cameras and visual monitoring systems. In addition to fire protection and protection against intrusion when the business is closed, protection of inventory and prevention of theft such as shoplifting are business security concerns not normally found in the home.
In the area of residential security systems, the two different types are what are called the bells only system and the monitored security system. The bells only system will ring alarms and flash lights in hopes of alerting occupants and neighbors of a potential threat. It also hopes to frighten away the intruder. The second type is called the monitored system. In this type of security system, the protected home is connected to a central monitoring station. The monitoring station has procedures in place for verifying alarms and notifying police or fire departments.
It is also common to classify security systems as installed or do it yourself. The DIY systems are much simpler and consist of devices that are easily placed such as smoke detectors and alarms. Most DIY systems would be considered bells only systems. The installed systems are generally much more complex and also involve connection to a remote monitoring station. Although DIY systems can save a considerable amount of money on installation costs, they tend to be less comprehensive in their overall security than an installed system.
There are other classifications used in security systems. Wireless and wired are two others. Wireless security technology is becoming more common. There are also security systems that include video capability. These visual orientated types of security systems are more common in business applications, but many homes have begun to use visual aids such as video cameras watching entrance ways.
Security is a big and often tenuous concept. The Security Industry is often on the cutting edge of technology and new products and new types of systems are being introduced all the time. Different types of security systems serve different purposes. There is no one answer to every security problem, nor is there ever a way to insure complete security in an uncertain world. The different types of security systems are the ways that we keep trying to prevail.
